September is National Baby Safety Month, and in honor of keeping our children safe, several Jim Ellis Service Centers are offering specials on safety-related maintenance and repairs.

Most of these service specials are about tires. Tires are "where the rubber meets the road" quite literally when it comes to your car, truck or SUV.  Tires can impact fuel efficiency, the smoothness of the ride, braking ease and more. 

To begin with, when you purchase new tires, you need to be sure you've got the right size, type and tread.

Size is determined by the OEM for the make and model of the vehicle. Your dealer's technician and your owner's manual will have this information.  Using undersized tires can overheat or overload the tire, while oversized tires can rub. 

The Type of tire depends upon how you use the vehicle, and what kind of terrain you need to drive on. Performance tires are best on dry pavement, but wear down quickly, and might not be best for every day use. Pickups and SUVs will want tires that are made specifically for off-road use or hauling heavier loads.
 
Tread is important as well.  Some tires (such as the "Mud and Snow" tread-tires) are suitable for all seasons and all weather conditions because they are created specifically to provide traction in rain, slush, mud and even snow.  True "Snow" tires are made for areas of the country that get regular or heavy snowfall.  There are also standard highway treads for normal driving conditions such as dry pavement or light rain.
